My approach to city photography
It all starts with an idea.
“You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”
-Ansel Adams
One my favorite genres of photography it the so called city-scape. Being from a medium sized city, I really do enjoy hitting the pavement around my local metropolitan centre.
In this ere’ blog entry I would to expound upon my favorite ways to enjoy the process of city photography.
First of all
By Car
I find riding around looking for compositions to be an almost meditative experience. It is useful in town but I find it quite a bit more effective on the fringes of town; mostly because of the availability of parking in the city center. Parking decks are another way to maximize your car for compositions! Although I have been escorted off of most of the decks here locally at some point.
By Bike
This is honestly my favourite way to get around shooting downtown! The freedom afforded to you by your bicycle is second to none! You can zip around town chasing light, different textures, and architecture. Or street photography can become a synch when you are on a bike; I even set up on a island between two lanes of traffic one time to do long exposures ***disclaimer, do not do this as I have done, this is very dangerous***
In conclusion
I would recommend on your daily commute to the office, maybe taking the long way round and scouting for new routes and compositions! I like to scout compositions with my car in the morning then come back after work for my afternoon bike ride to follow through! But none the less any vehicle or vessel shall do, be it a car, bike, skateboard, dogsled or even boat (Venice I’m looking at you) Even if its by foot get out there and shoot!! and Remember you must be exposed to expose!
